India generates an estimated 62 million metric tons of organic, biodegradable waste annually. Surprisingly, only about 70% of this waste, roughly 43 million metric tons, is gathered for disposal. Among the collected waste, merely 12 million metric tons undergo recycling, leaving a substantial 31 million metric tons to be deposited in landfills.
